EAPC’s first project requiring a survey from the Arizona Department of Health passed with zero comments. The surveyor commented that this Pediatric Behavioral Unit is the nicest they had seen.
- With a growing need for behavioral health care in the Valley and around the country, Banner Thunderbird Medical Center (BTMC) has just completed a new 12-bed inpatient pediatric behavioral health unit for patients ages 5-12
- BTMC renovated their existing Cascade 500 unit, transforming the space into a new uplifting healing environment
- Banner medical experts have noted a significant increase in pediatric behavioral health cases at hospitals, both in Arizona and nationwide, with the trend accelerating in the past year
- While the increase has been seen in both children and teens, children under age 13 typically have the longest stays in Emergency Departments and continue to be an underserved patient population
- The availability of these inpatient beds will help to alleviate long waits in Emergency Departments, providing specialized and highly-skilled care in a safe, comforting, and age-appropriate environment
- The unit has been thoughtfully designed for children, with plenty of safety features and special touches such as artwork featuring baby ducks, puppies, and butterflies, plenty of natural light, outdoor recreation spaces, and youthful colors designed to enhance developmental, emotional, and psychological well being
- Custom wall protection graphics that not only provide a fun energy, but also act as wayfinding elements
- Drawing inspiration from the behavioral health unit name Cascade, these custom wall protection graphic designs incorporate multiple cascading arcs in a gradient color pattern
- The colors used in the graphics are derived from the recently approved new Banner Health pediatric paint color palette
- The softness of the arcs and shades of color evoke a sense of cascading calmness throughout the unit
- Placement of each graphic was carefully curated to provide wayfinding to patient rooms and fun energy to communal areas
