We can tailor the duration and detail of a test burn to the requirements of each facility.

A complete coal test burn will last 30 to 90 days. During that period of time an EAPC fuels and performance engineering expert will remain on site to test, analyze, trend and report fuel switch-initiated impacts.

The report will contain at least the following:

  • Net Unit Heat Rate
  • Boiler Efficiency
  • NOX Emissions
  • SO2 Emissions
  • Opacity
  • Total Coal Flow
  • SH & RH Sprays
  • ESP or Baghouse Performance
  • Boiler Heat Duty
  • Slagging and Fouling
  • Mill Performance including Fineness, Distribution, and Motor Current
  • FD Fan performance
  • ID Fan performance
  • Air Heater Performance
  • Impacts on Ash Quantity and Quality

The test burn preparation begins with a preliminary engineering review of the test fuel to qualitatively evaluate the following:

  • Impact to generation levels
  • Impact to plant emissions
  • Impact to boiler slagging and efficiency
  • Impact to coal mill capacity (coal handling system)
  • Impact to the ash handling system
  • Impact to maintenance and operational practices

To begin the test burn, baseline conditions are documented using approximately the last thirty days’ historical data and the most recent performance tests firing the baseline coal, accessing as much data as possible from plant data historian in a retroactive manner.

Performance throughout the test burn is trended on a daily basis.  Daily updates on the status of the test burn and issues encountered are distributed to members of the test team and select plant staff.  The contrast between baseline plant performance firing the baseline coal and test burn performance firing the test coal is evaluated for comparison on a daily basis using data at a nominally gross generation.
